Merced recreation program hits the road

Mike Conway

Post Date:06/16/2016

Mobile Recreation coming to a park near you

Shoot some hoops one day, volleyball two days later, you never know what's up with the Mobile Recreation Program, except there will always be inflatables or bounce houses.

The goal isn't to frustrate park-goers, it's to give them different park experiences and different things to do this summer, whether they are 2 or 82.

It may be football, badminton, dodgeball or good ol' kickball, maybe some science experiments, or face-painting, arts and crafts, or board games, but it is always fun from 4 to 8 p.m. when staff hits the park.

The Mobile Recreation Program is a new addition to the City of Merced Parks and Recreation Department lineup of activities this year, along with Movies in the Park and the Rahilly Park Playground Program.

'We wanted to reach out to as much of the City as we could with our Mobile Rec Program,' said Assistant to the City Manager/PIO Mike Conway. 'Our theme this year was 'Let's Recreate Citywide' and we are doing that with as many of our programs as possible.'

The Mobile Recreation Program will visit 20 different parks in the City, going to neighborhoods that haven't had City recreation programs in years. It also gives people a chance to discover parks located in different neighborhoods of the City.

People will also get a chance to discover what Mobile Recreation is all about at Movies in the Park, because it will serve as an opening act. Starting at 6:30 p.m. Mobile Rec staff will set up activities for people to enjoy while waiting for sundown and the movies to begin.

The Movies in the Park also rotate around the City, as part of the 'Let's Recreate Citywide' theme. The free movies have already been in Applegate and Merino Parks, next up on the schedule:

GOOSEBUMPS, June 24, McNamara Park, 1040 Canal St.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2, July 8, Rahilly Park, 3400 Parsons Ave.

STAR WARS, July 22, Youth Sports Complex, Wardrobe and West Avenues.

Movies will begin at dusk. Bring your family, friends and everyone in the neighborhood, along with a blanket, lawn chairs and snacks.

The Rahilly Park Playground Program is Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through July 29. It is for kids K-6th grades. The cost is $15, and additional youths in the family are $10. Pre-registration is required. The program includes arts and crafts, outdoor activities, games, UC Merced S.A.F.E. Sports,

For more information on any of the programs, or to register for the Playground Program, call City of Merced Parks and Recreation at 385-6235.
