Merced City Council to discuss water conservation, youth center
The Merced City Council will consider new water conservation measures and hear proposals for a second youth center at its Monday, June 1, meeting.
The Council will meet at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the second floor of the Merced Civic Center, 678 W. 18th St.
The Council will consider additional water conservation measures to achieve the 36 percent reduction in water use that the State has mandated the City reach. The City already will be installing water meters in the approximately 10,700 residential homes that don't have meters, which is expected to cut water use by 20 to 25 percent.
Among the changes in effect under the new ordinance, would be: prohibiting the watering of outdoor landscaping within 48 hours of a measurable rainfall, requiring landscaping systems in new home to have drip or micro spray systems and limiting outdoor irrigation to one day a week during the winter months between November 15 and March 15.
The two groups applying to use the Stephen Leonard Park Youth Center will make their proposals to the Council Monday night. The groups already went before the Recreation and Parks Commission, which expressed no preference for either group.
The Merced County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Merced Soccer Academy (Merced Atlas) submitted applications to operate the center. Both groups indicated they would provide a series of activities for youth, homework assistance and some programming for adults.
The Council will hold a study session at 5:30 p.m. to interview applicants for the Planning Commission. A closed session will be held at 5 p.m. to confer with labor negotiators regarding firefighters and police sergeant's negotiations and regarding a worker's comp claims.
City Council meetings are streamed live on the Internet.
