City of Merced Announces HCD Homekey Award for Innovative Housing Project
Merced, Calif – July 12, 2024—The City of Merced is proud to announce that it has been awarded $11,150,000 from the HCD Homekey program to develop the Homekey CC915 Merced Phase 2 project. This new construction initiative will create 58 units of permanent supportive housing designed to serve both homeless and chronically homeless individuals, focusing on households earning 30% or less of the Area Median Income (AMI).
The Homekey CC915 Merced Phase 2 project, located at 125 E. 13th Street, will feature a diverse range of unit types, including 24 studio units, 13 one-bedroom units, 20 two-bedroom units, and one one-bedroom manager units. The project will employ innovative and sustainable building practices, converting new 40-foot-long shipping containers or modular structures into comfortable, well-designed homes. This approach underscores Merced's commitment to environmentally friendly and cost-effective housing solutions.
Residents will benefit from various off-site amenities within two miles of the project, including access to a bus stop, grocery store, medical clinic, library, pharmacy, and a public park.
The successful implementation of this project is supported by the combined efforts and financial commitments of various local agencies:
- Anabasis: Land donation valued at $500,000.
- Merced County Human Services Agency: Enforceable funding commitment totaling $919,368 for the first three years.
- Merced City and County Continuum of Care: Operating and support commitment of $400,000.
- CalAIM Housing Support via Central California Alliance for Health: A one-time commitment of $230,000 in the first year and an annual commitment of $227,976 for years 1-5, totaling $1,369,880.
- Housing Authority of the County of Merced: Intent to pursue tenant-based vouchers for years 6-15, totaling $5,263,152.
- Central Valley Opportunity Fund: Rental and operational subsidy commitment totaling $625,000 for years 1-5.
Mayor Matthew Serratto expressed the City Council's strong support for the project stating, "The Homekey CC915 Merced Phase 2 project is another positive step forward in our efforts to address homelessness in Merced. This innovative development provides much-needed housing and integrates sustainable building practices and critical support services to help our most vulnerable residents thrive."
The City of Merced extends its appreciation to all the partners and agencies whose dedication and financial support have made this project possible. Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive community.
