Welcome sign, cannabis tax election on agenda
A welcome sign for Merced and a commercial cannabis business tax are on the Merced City Council agenda Tuesday night.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the second floor of the Merced Civic Center, (City Hall), 678 W. 18th St. The Council normally meets the first and third Mondays of the month, except when there is a holiday.
More than 50 years ago the City used to have a large sign on 16th Street welcoming visitors to Merced when that street was one of the main entrances to the community. The Council directed staff to look into coming up with a design to welcome people to town.
Staff will present to options to the Council for consideration, and ask where they would want to locate a sign.
Council will be asked to consider calling a special election to place a tax measure on the June 5 ballot regarding cannabis sales. The funds raised would be used for police and fire protection services and parks and recreation services and cannot be spent for any other purpose.
The Council will meet in closed session at 5 p.m. to confer with labor negotiators, and discuss anticipated litigation.

Request to Speak forms are available at the meeting or can be downloaded from the City's website. Cards must be turned in to the City Clerk in order for a person to be recognized by the Council.
