Turf project, bike race on City Council agenda
A pilot project to remove some turf in Applegate and road closures for a bike race are on the agenda for the Merced City Council Tuesday.
The regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the second floor of the Merced Civic Center, 678 W. 18th St. Council meetings are normally held on the first and third Mondays of the month, however, when Monday is a holiday it is held the next day.
The City Council will consider applying for a state grant of up to $20,000 to remove 10,700 square feet of turf in the Rose Garden in Applegate Park and replacing it with decomposed granite. Roses are currently intermingled with the turf now, and everything is watered with flood irrigation. Under the grant, 150-170 older roses would be replaced and a drip irrigation system would be installed along with an irrigation clock. There would be no net-loss of roses when the project is finished.
The 29th Annual Original Merced Criterium Bicycle Race is scheduled for Feb. 21. The race promoter is asking Council to close a number of Downtown streets around the Courthouse from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. the day of the race.
City Council meetings are streamed live on the Internet. A link to the live meeting is on the City's home page at www.cityofmerced.org. The City will also add the Council video to YouTube for people that were unable to watch it live. These services are in addition to the live broadcast of the regular meeting on Comcast's Government Channel 96.
The Council agenda is posted online at www.cityofmerced.org and is available outside the chambers prior to the meeting. Request to Speak forms are available at the meeting or can be downloaded from the City's website. Cards must be turned in to the City Clerk in order for a person to be recognized by the Council.
